<h2 style="white-space:pre-line">STATEMENT </h2>
A single dense plate, printed in blue on an off-white ground, where the elements of the universe refuse to stay apart. The atom beside the galaxy, the cell beside the star, the human beside all the machinery and living things around him , drawn not as separate objects but as threads pulled through one continuous weave. Nothing in the image stands alone. Every form is wired to another, and the eye cannot find a border where one thing ends and the next begins.

The work did not begin as an image. 
It began as a contemplation: where do bodies dissolve? The dead, the plants, those who came before us , have their atoms become part of us? Out of that contemplation came a story.

In a village perched high in the mountains of Abha, the houses stood interlocked, leaning on one another like a single body folded upon itself. 
The village was circular: its inner doors opened onto narrow alleys that branched into its belly, and its outer doors opened from behind onto the farms that ringed it on every side. Each house had a courtyard, and in the courtyard a pen for the sheep and cattle , the cattle for ploughing, for milk and clarified butter; the sheep for milk and butter, and for the manure that fed the crops.
 In the courtyards, hens laid their eggs, and a rooster woke the village before the white thread could be told from the black. 
The harvest was wheat and barley, and what the soil of Abha would yield of grain.

In the village lived two brothers: Abdullah, the elder, and Ali. 
Orphans, they had grown up alone at the edge of the village, with no one but their land and each other. Neither could read or write , no letter had ever entered their house , yet they were not ignorant. 
Their wisdom rose out of the ground: from long watching of the crop as it sprang up and died and sprang up again, from watching the ewe give birth, from the death they had seen with their own eyes more times than could be counted. 
A wisdom not read in any book, but gathered from the soil with the tips of the fingers.

They had a neighbour named Ahmad.

Ahmad had not always been mad. 
He was a man like the others of the village , he ploughed, he sowed, he herded - except that his children died young, one after another, until death in his house became a thing awaited rather than wondered at. 
And he bore all of it for the sake of his wife, for he loved her with a love that made every loss bearable. 
She was the one who wiped away the death of the children; she was the last hope he had left, the support he leaned on each time the ground gave way beneath him. 
As long as she lived, something remained in the world worth ploughing for.

Then, in her last pregnancy, she died in childbirth, and the child died days after her.

And everything was cut off from Ahmad at once. No hope was left to lean on, no purpose in effort or work. 
Plough for what, and for whom? So he abandoned the land, and the land abandoned itself once he did: it dried and cracked and turned barren, growing nothing, as if it had withered from within just as he had. 
The grief did not leave him; the grief had become him.
 And from the sheer weight of it, he turned into something else that had no name , a terrifying madness that came out at night, crying out and doing harm. 
The people of the village humoured him and watched over him, not because they did not fear him, but because they knew, in their hearts, that what afflicted Ahmad was no strange illness. 
It was love, torn from its owner, finding nowhere to go and so becoming madness.

Then Ahmad died.

They buried him in his courtyard, in his barren land, for he had no one to claim his body but the land itself. 
The people folded away his story and returned to their crops, and everyone forgot ... everyone but Abdullah.

Weeks passed. 

And one night, as the two brothers sat in the courtyard after settling the cattle, Abdullah turned to his brother and said, in a low voice, as though afraid someone might hear:

"Ali, nature has deceived us."

Ali raised his head. "How?"

"I feel madness running through my body."

Ali was silent. Then he said, looking at his own hands: "So do I.
 Something has entered my behaviour that is not mine. I do a thing and then stand over it, stunned, as though the one who did it were another man living inside me."

Abdullah said: "Do you remember Ahmad?"

"God rest him."

"We buried him in his courtyard. 
In that ground. 
And days later I saw the worms come out of the soil there, fat and many, and our hens went to them and pecked and tore, then returned to their coop.
 And we .. Ali ... we ate from those hens, and from their eggs, morning after morning."

The two fell silent. 
The rooster was far off in the dark, and the cattle chewed the cud.

"Ahmad is in our bodies now, brother. 
He did not die. 
He moved. We chewed him without knowing it. 
And what entered us of him is not his flesh alone , it is his grief. 
The man who loved, and had what he loved torn from him until he went mad . 
here is his grief running through me now. 
I feel it, and I know no cause for it in my own life.
 Is it my grief, or a grief I inherited in a mouthful?"

Abdullah had never read a book. 
He had never heard of an atom, or a cell, or a dying star.
 But he saw what is truer than all of it: he saw that matter does not perish , it moves. 
That the soil which covered Ahmad became worms, and the worms became hens, and the hens became flesh in his own arm and eggs in his own mouth. 
And that Ahmad had not gone into nothingness; he had scattered, and entered the bodies around him  and among them, his.

<h2 style="white-space:pre-line">THE WORK</h2>
 
Matter does not vanish; it moves through a community of organisms. An atom in the soil becomes a leaf, the leaf feeds an insect, the insect a bird, the bird dies and returns its atoms to the soil, and from there they enter another body. We stand at the heart of this cycle: we are shaped by what surrounds us, and we become what we eat and drink. Every bite, every breath, every mouthful of water enters the body and alters it ,, not its cells alone, but its mood and its behaviour, and what stirs in it without its knowing the source.
The carbon in the muscles, the iron in the blood, the calcium in the bones , all of it was made in the heart of a star that exploded before the Earth was born. We are not separate from the universe; we are what remains of its latest cycle, our atoms having passed through bodies before us, and bound to pass through bodies after.
The image makes this visible. The elements interlace across the plate . the atom and the galaxy, the cell and the star, the human and all that surrounds him , not as separate things, but as threads in a single weave. No border between matter and spirit, between the individual and the absolute.

<h2 style="text-align:center">THE ENCOUNTER</h2>
 
The human is the only creature that has tried to comprehend the universe, to build a model of it within himself. He thinks of himself as a closed entity, an independent self looking at the universe from outside it. But the universe does not stand outside him; it runs through him. The laws of physics, the pulses of consciousness, the rhythm of time, the atoms of those who died before him , all interwoven in him, inseparable from him. He is not an isolated point in the fabric of existence; he is the fabric itself, folded upon itself until it became able to ask about itself.
The plate is read at close range. Its density rewards slowness: the longer the eye stays, the more the wiring between things reveals itself, until the viewer stops reading the image as a diagram and begins to recognise himself inside it.
